About New Zealand

New Zealand is a country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two large islands (the North Island and the South Island) and numerous smaller islands. The indigenous Maori named New Zealand Aotearoa, which is usually translated into English as The Land of the Long White Cloud.

The population is mostly of European descent, with the indigenous Mâori being the largest minority. Asians and non-Maori Polynesians are also significant minorities. The official languages are English and Maori, with English used in most settings. Christianity is the main religion in New Zealand.

Elizabeth II, as the Queen of New Zealand, is the Head of State and, in her absence, is represented by a non-partisan Governor-General. Political power is held by the democratically elected Parliament of New Zealand under the leadership of the Prime Minister, who is the Head of Government.

New Zealand has a modern, prosperous, developed economy. The country has a relatively high standard of living comparable to Southern Europe; for example - Spain. Agriculture has been and continues to be the main export industry in New Zealand. Like the UK and Australia, New Zealanders drive on the left hand side of the road.

New Zealand has a population of about 4.2 million. Hawke’s Bay is the fifth largest urban area – after the four largest cities of Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch. The population of Hawke’s Bay is about 150,000 and the two main cities are Napier and Hastings.
