Two carriers at Hawke’s Bay Airport granted customs licenses for private international flights

A new customs decision means select business titans, famous faces, politicians, and medical staff could soon be flying directly into Hawke’s Bay from overseas without having to navigate ‘ad hoc’ situations.

As of January 11, two jet base operators at Hawke’s Bay Airport (Air Napier and Skyline Aviation) have been cleared by New Zealand Customs Services to welcome specific private aircraft from overseas due to their new Customs Controlled Area licenses.

Cyclone Gabrielle: Don't stop the presses - getting the paper through to flood-hit Gisborne

OPINION: The paper must get through. I’m not sure if that’s a famous quote (the internet is not great in Wairoa) but get through, it did.

When contractors were unable to deliver the Sunday Star -Times to flood-hit Gisborne, Air Napier stepped in. As the ring-in delivery crew - myself and visual journalist Alden Williams – flew in from Wellington, pilot John Tucker was there on the tarmac.

Could electric Seagliders really work in NZ, and how would they be regulated?

New Zealanders have been told that in just a few years they could be travelling 500 kilometres per hour, just 10 metres above the water onboard an electric craft that looks like something straight out of The Jetsons.

Air Napier owner Shah Aslam and former New Zealand Air Force chief John Hamilton on Thursday announced they were talking with investors about bringing a new type of vessel called seagliders to New Zealand through their business Ocean Flyer.

Kea Kids News: Ocean Flyer's big plans for an electric-powered sea glider

Kea Kids News checks out plans for electric powered transport that borrows technology from birds.

Lote Shanley, 10, from Havelock North Primary School is in Napier to meet the team from Ocean Flyer who are working on an electric sea glider – a low altitude machine that flies just 10 metres above the surface of the water.

The revolutionary form of transport is part ferry, part plane and part hydrofoil. How does that work? Watch the video above to find out.

With a plan to compete with aeroplanes and ferries, the Ocean Flyer is expected to be in the air – and in the water– from 2025.
