Meet John Hamilton: From Chief of Air Force to Air Napier Leadership

We probably do not say it often enough, but we are very proud to have John Hamilton as Air Napier's Operations Director. He brings exceptional aviation and crisis leadership experience, gained through senior leadership roles in the Royal New Zealand Air Force and in national emergency management.

John Hamilton, CNZM, MVO

On leaving school John Hamilton followed in the footsteps of his father, Denys and in 1971 joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Denys had served in the RNZAF as a pilot in the Pacific theatre of World War II with No 2 Squadron and attained the rank of Squadron Leader and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC).

John’s RNZAF career began at Wigram in Christchurch as a university officer cadet. After three year’s at the University of Canterbury he graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree and began his flying training on Harvard and Devon aircraft. He was awarded his RNZAF pilot’s brevet or wings in 1975 and then learned to fly helicopters. He joined No 3 Squadron at the then Hobsonville airfield, RNZAF Base Auckland, to fly the Sioux and Iroquois helicopters. In 1979 John began an exchange tour in Australia with No 9 Squadron RAAF based at Amberley in Queensland flying the Iroquois. On returning to New Zealand in 1981, John became a flying instructor and was posted back to No 3 Squadron as a flight commander and instructor.

John subsequently held flying and command and leadership appointments at all levels of the RNZAF including Commanding Officer of No 3 Squadron in 1989, Base Commander at Ohakea 1996-98, Air Officer Commanding RNZAF Air Command 1998-2002 and finished his career with a four year period from 2002-2006 as the Chief of Air Force in the rank of Air Vice-Marshal.

John completed command and staff courses with the Royal Air Force Staff College in the United Kingdom at Bracknell in 1984 and with the United States Air Force Air Warfare College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery in Alabama. John was made a member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) in 1981 for his service to the Queen as her equerry during the Royal Tour of New Zealand in 1981. He was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2001 for leading the planning for the New Zealand deployment to East Timor, and in 2006 he was promoted to Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) in recognition of his leadership as Chief of Air Force.

After retiring from the RNZAF in 2006 John held the appointment of Director of the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management for the period 2006-2014. Following the 2011 Christchurch earthquake John was appointed by the government to be the National Controller responsible for the control and co-ordination of the national response to the crisis.

This experience in high-pressure, high-stakes environments underpins the calm, structured, and safety-first approach we value at Air Napier.

After leaving the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management in 2014 John has worked as a consultant in emergency management, business continuity planning and crisis leadership.

Since joining us at Air Napier in 2019, John has played a key role in strengthening operational systems, supporting pilot development, and maintaining the high standards our customers expect.

He remains actively involved in aviation, flying with the Central Hawke’s Bay Aero Club and contributing to the development of future pilots as Director of the Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School.

At Air Napier, our strength lies in our people. With leaders like John Hamilton, we bring world-class aviation experience, proven leadership, and an uncompromising commitment to safety, ensuring every flight is backed by decades of expertise.
